Is the format war over? God I hope so! It looks like Blue-Ray is becoming the standard for high definition DVD distribution (beating it’s competitor HD-DVD).

Blue-Ray DVD is backed by Sony, Panasonic and Samsung, while HD DVD is supported by Toshiba, Microsoft and Intel.

Hollywood studios have been pretty supportive of Blue Ray as well, being backed up by five of the seven big Hollywood studios. Paramount and Universal are now the only ones backing HD-DVD.

What does this mean to new media creators? If Blue-Ray becomes THE format for high definition DVD authoring, then it will make our lives easier, since we already have way too many formats that we need to publish to (SD DVD, iPod, AppleTV, Flash, Windows Media, etc.)

I think 2008 will be the year Blue Ray takes over.
