Tip #42 - How To Clean Up a Skype Interview in Soundtrack Pro For Podcasting

So you just finished recording a Skype interview and you are ready to publish it? Don’t think so! You need to clean up the ums and ahs and breaths of the guest. Open up Soundtrack Pro, get some java and let’s start cleaning up the interview!

Part 1 - Overview

  • Using Soundtrack Pro
  • How to clean up a Skype interview
  • Cleaning up sound

  • Some experience is required

Part 2 - Cleaning Up The Interview

  • Interview was recorded in Skype
  • Left channel is guest
  • Right channel is host
  • Click + Drag creates a cycle region
  • CMD + DELETE = Deletes audio
  • CMD + Z = Undo
  • CMD + X = Ripple delete audio
  • Process–>Fade In menu commend to smooth a cut
  • SPACE = Start / stop play
  • CMD + or - = Zoom in or out.

Part 3 - Final Touches

  • Copy the same file, one for guest and one for host.
  • Process–>Convert to mono to convert file to mono.
  • Highlight and delete any blank audio spaces to bring it to -inf Db.
  • Process–>Dynamics–>Compressor to level out the highs and lows.
  • CMD + L = Normalize (Set it to -.25Db)
  • Process–>Convert to stereo to convert file back to stereo.

Part 4 - Wrap up!

  • God gave you hands, but Apple gave you cool tools inside Soundtrack Pro, so use them.
  • Tools to use:
    • Ripple Delete
    • Compressor
    • Normalization
    • Convert to stereo
    • Convert to mono
